Standard Candle

At half past seven Bernie opened the dehydrator and put two fingers on the outermost wrap of tape to see whether it had stopped being sticky. It had. Eight hours at a hundred and thirty degrees and the reel came out dry, which meant she had a week, maybe ten days, before the binder went soft again and she had to decide all over again what was worth transferring.

Delbert Pryor had left the museum six hundred and eleven cassettes, forty-one reels, and a shoebox of index cards. The cards were why she'd taken the collection at all. He had logged everything in ballpoint: date, frequency, station nickname, and a remarks line that got harder to read year by year until the last few cards were mostly shapes with a slant to them.

Tobin came into the tape room with his coat still on.

"You need to hear this."

"I'm threading."

"You can thread and hear." He put his phone face up on the workbench, on top of her deacidification log, and she moved it off the log without looking at him.

The sound was a wood block, or something meant to be one. Two knocks. A pause. Three knocks. Pause. Five, then seven, then eleven.

"Primes," she said.

"It's a star." He was grinning in the way he had, which involved his whole jaw. "It's a star in Lynx, and it's blinking primes, and it's been on every feed since about four this morning. Somebody at the survey found it in the archive data. Nine years of it."

"That's the actual star?"

"That's the sonification. They took the dimming events and mapped them onto a click."

She got the tape onto the take-up hub and let the machine pull it slow, watching the pack. "Why is it going down?"

"What?"

"Your clicks. Eleven, seven, five, three, two. It went down."

Tobin picked up the phone and looked at it as though it had lied to him. "Huh. I think they play it both ways. It's a sequence, it goes up in one direction and down in the other, depending which end you start."

"That's not what a sequence is."

"Bernie."

"I'm just saying it's not the same thing." She sat down and reached for her glasses, which were on the beaded chain around her neck, where they always were and where Tobin had once told her they made her look like she was ninety.

"They think it's a message," he said. "Everybody thinks it's a message. Somebody's already on the news saying we should answer."

"With what?"

"I don't know. Primes."

She put the glasses on. "Tell Wes the compressor's cycling again. The one on the small unit. It shuts off for about eleven seconds and comes back."

Tobin went out. He left his phone. She listened to the clicks four more times before she turned it off, and then she sat there for a while with her hand on the deck, not pressing anything.


The Sexton was Pryor's name for it, or somebody's. Every shortwave listener with a shoebox had their own vocabulary and half of it was inherited. The station came up on 6840 kilohertz, played eleven seconds of a church bell, and then a woman read five-figure groups in a Midwestern accent for twenty-two minutes. Pryor had recorded it two or three hundred times between 1971 and 1984 and had written a card for every session.

She was transferring one of the baked reels on a Thursday when the woman stopped mid-group and the carrier dropped and the room went to tape hiss. Bernie's hand went to the pot before she caught herself. Eleven seconds, near enough. The woman came back in the middle of a different group, as if she'd kept reading through it, which she had.

The card for that reel said: SEXTON 6840. 0210z. Carrier down 11 sec mid-group. AGAIN.

The capital letters were his. She went to the shoebox.

There were nineteen cards with AGAIN on them, or again, or once AGAIN, 4th time. The earliest was March 1971 and the last was September 1978. She wrote the dates out on the back of a deaccession form because there was nothing else on the bench, and then she counted the days between them, which took a while because she kept losing her place in February.

She sat back. The chair had a bad caster and it went sideways, and she put a foot down to stop it.

She got up, went to the reading room, and pulled the old Handbook of Mathematical Tables that somebody's estate had donated with a box of ship plans, and she checked, because she wanted to be wrong in a specific way rather than a general one. They were consecutive. Not just primes. Every prime between 457 and 479, in descending order, with nothing skipped.

On the last card of the nineteen, under the date, Pryor had written in pencil, very small: 467 from last one. Look at the 74 book.

There was no 74 book. She checked the accession record twice. The family had brought what was in the basement and there was water in the basement.


Wes Doherty ran the Ammon Cove Maritime Collection out of a converted sail loft with a roof that had been six years from failing for eleven years. He listened to her with his coat on, which was his way of putting a clock on a conversation.

"So the radio station had a fault."

"The intervals are consecutive descending primes."

"Bernie, if I count anything nineteen times I'll find something in it." He was not being cruel. He'd been a fisheries biologist before this and he had a biologist's allergy to patterns. "You know what this is. You've been in a room by yourself since March."

"I'm not saying it's the star."

"You said the star."

"I said the star's doing the same thing. That's a different sentence."

He picked up a stapler off her desk, looked at it, put it down. "The finding aid for Pryor is due to the state at the end of October or we don't get the second half of the money, and if we don't get the second half of the money your line ends in November instead of next November. That's the whole situation. That's all of it."

"I know."

"Do the finding aid."

"I'm doing the finding aid."

She was doing the finding aid. She was also, at ten o'clock that night, sitting at her kitchen table in Ammon with a bowl of oatmeal she'd made at six, downloading the supplementary table from the preprint.

The object was catalogued as VVR 8146-3. The press had started calling it the Metronome by the second day. The team had nine years of survey photometry and had recovered a hundred and forty dimming events, each one about eleven seconds long, each one a drop of roughly four percent, and the spacing between them was shrinking. They had fitted it and published the epochs. In the discussion section they wrote that the sequence appeared to be descending through the primes and that if it reversed at its floor and began ascending again, the symmetry would be difficult to explain by any natural process.

Nobody in the paper used the word signal. Everybody outside the paper did.

The distance came from a period-luminosity relation. They had treated the object as a standard candle, matched it against a class of variable it resembled, and got about three kiloparsecs, and put a figure in the abstract, and the figure went around the world attached to the word civilization.

Bernie took the epochs and lined them up against her nineteen dates from the shoebox.

The star's events and Pryor's dropouts were the same events. Not the same kind. The same. March 14, 1971 was in both columns.

She looked at that for long enough that the oatmeal went hard, and then she washed the bowl and left it in the rack and went to bed and lay there doing arithmetic on the ceiling.


The keeper's logs for Sarner Ledge Light came to the museum in 1978 from a woman in Presque Isle who had found them in her father's garage. Nobody had ever processed them. They sat in four record cartons on the mezzanine under a plastic sheet with a mouse-bait station beside them, and the plastic sheet was the whole of the collections care they had received in forty-eight years.

Bernie brought the first carton down on the cart because of the nail in her left tibia, which meant stairs one at a time, which meant a carton in her arms was a bad idea.

Enos Cobb kept the light from 1868 to 1891. He wrote a small upright hand with the loops closed and he never once wasted a line. The Light-House Board forms had columns for wind, weather, hours lighted, and a remarks column about two inches wide, and Cobb used the remarks column the way a man uses a hallway.

23 Feby 1874. Lamp extinguished 11 sec, no cause found. Wick trimmed at 6. Oil at three quarters. Relighted itself.

That last word was the one that stopped her. Not relighted. Itself.

She went forward through the volume. It took her the rest of the day and most of the next, because the 1876 book had been wet at some point and the pages had fused at the fore edge and she had to work them apart with a bone folder and a lot of patience she did not have.

5 July 1876. As before. 11 sec.

13 Novr 1878. As before.

Then a gap in the entries where an inspector's letter had been bound in, on Light-House Board letterhead, District 1, informing Keeper Cobb that repeated reports of unexplained extinguishment reflected on the attention given the apparatus, that the Board had no record of similar reports from any other station, and that the matter would be considered in connection with his next efficiency rating.

After that Cobb wrote 11 and nothing else. Just the number, in the remarks column, on eight separate dates across nine years.

On the last one, in 1889, he did not write the number. He drew a small cross.

Bernie put the dates in a column in her notebook. She did the subtraction three times, once on paper and twice with the calculator on her phone because she did not trust herself anymore.

She sat in the mezzanine with the mouse-bait station by her foot and the smell of old mildew and cold pine coming up out of the carton, and she found that she had her hand flat on the open page, on Cobb's remarks column, which was terrible practice and which she did not move.

Downstairs the compressor cut out and came back.


Tobin photographed the 1874 page and put it on a forum.

He did it on a Sunday and by Tuesday morning there were eleven hundred comments and by Wednesday somebody had written an article with the headline Maine Lighthouse Keeper Recorded Alien Signal in 1874, Museum Says. The museum had not said. The museum, meaning Wes, said a number of things on Wednesday afternoon with the door shut.

"He's twenty-four," Bernie said.

"He's twenty-four and he works here."

"He didn't post the finding aid, Wes, he posted a photograph of a page."

"Of an unprocessed collection. With no rights statement. That we've had since before I was born, and now the woman in Presque Isle has a lawyer, and the lawyer has my number." He was standing at the window with his back to her, watching the parking lot, which had two cars in it. "Do you know what's in the comments?"

"I don't read comments."

"Somebody found a photo of you on the county website. From the pancake breakfast."

"That's a good photo of me."

He turned around. Some of the fight went out of his shoulders. "The astronomers put out a thing. Did you see? Saying the historical claims are noise. Saying if you go looking through enough old documents you'll find any interval you want."

"That's true, mostly."

"So you agree with them."

"I agree with the general principle." She stood up, because standing up took her a moment now and she didn't want to do it while he was leaving. "I didn't go looking, Wes. I was doing a transfer and the tape went quiet and I knew the number of seconds before I counted them."

He looked at her a long time.

"Finding aid," he said.


The thing about Tobin was that he apologized in the wrong currency. He brought her a coffee from the place by the co-op and a bag of the butterscotch she kept in her cardigan pocket, and he said sorry twice, and then he said, "But like. It is real, though. Right?"

"Go clean the case in the lobby. There are fingerprints on the west side."

He went. He was gone about four minutes and then she heard him coming back at a speed that meant the case was not what he wanted to talk about.

"Bernie."

"No."

"The tree."

She had walked past the tree four times a day for three years. Everybody who came into the building walked past the tree. It was a section of trunk about a meter across, cut and varnished and mounted on a steel cradle at the foot of the stairs, with a brass plate that said EASTERN WHITE PINE, RECOVERED FROM SKINNER'S BOG, 1953. GIFT OF THE LEMAY FAMILY. Children put their hands on it. There was a permanent oval of skin oil on the northeast quadrant that she had stopped trying to remove in her second month.

Somebody in the fifties had numbered the rings in India ink, tiny, every tenth ring, working out from the pith. And on certain rings, not many, there were small red dots.

She got down on the floor with her reading glasses and her phone light and counted the dots, and her hip complained, and she stayed there.

Nineteen dots.


Charlotte Neas at Orono had a voice like somebody who was already doing something else.

"Skinner's Bog. The Lemay pine. Yes. Why."

"I'm at the maritime collection in Ammon Cove. We have the section."

"I know where it is, I've seen it, it's mounted badly. What do you want."

"There's a thesis," Bernie said. "1954. Ward Lemay."

"Anomalous Light Rings in a Subfossil Pine from Skinner's Bog." Neas said it the way you say a phone number you've known since childhood. "It's a bad thesis. He was an undergraduate and his committee let him publish a hundred and forty pages on nineteen rings. He thought they were frost damage and then he thought they weren't and then he wrote forty pages of hedging."

"What are light rings?"

"Bands of underlignified latewood. The cells don't finish. You get a pale ring. Frost does it, cold summers do it, a lot of things do it, and the honest answer is we argue about it." A drawer opened somewhere. "The Lemay pine's been cross-dated properly since. Twice. It's solid. Why."

"Can I have the calendar years for the dots?"

"For the light rings."

"Yes."

Neas was quiet for a second. "Are you the lighthouse woman."

"I'm an archivist."

"That's not a no."

"No," Bernie said. "It isn't."

The file came through that afternoon. Neas had put no note with it, just a spreadsheet with the ring years and a column of confidence flags, and one line at the bottom that said cross-dating error on this series is +/- 1 yr. Do not embarrass me.

Bernie printed it and took it to the table by the window, which was the only table in the building with enough room, and she started summing primes.

It took her four days. She could have written something to do it and she did not, partly because the last time she'd written anything was in a language nobody used now, and partly because she wanted to touch every number. The idea was simple enough. If the gaps were descending through the primes, then the whole thing had a length. You could run it backward from the last event and add prime after prime and watch the calendar walk away from you.

Every prime under six thousand. Seven hundred and eighty-three of them. Two million one hundred and ninety thousand-odd days.

The bottom of the sequence, the last event, came out in November of the current year.

The top of it, the first event, landed in the spring of 3974 BCE, give or take how you handled the calendar, which she handled badly and then had to redo.

The nineteen light rings in Ward Lemay's pine fell between 3971 and 3679 BCE.

She checked them against her running sum. Sixteen years and change between the early events, contracting by a few weeks each time, which no tree could ever record and which she therefore did not need. She only needed the years to land where the arithmetic said they would land.

Seventeen of the nineteen landed. The other two were off by one, which was Neas's stated error, which Neas had written down at the bottom of the spreadsheet before Bernie asked.

She looked at the printout for a while and then she went downstairs and stood in front of the tree with her hands in her cardigan pockets. The oval of skin oil. The brass plate. The steel cradle, mounted badly.

Ward Lemay had counted the dots in 1954 and been troubled by the spacing and written forty pages of hedging and then gone to Bangor and sold insurance until 1997.

Enos Cobb had drawn a cross.

Delbert Pryor had written look at the 74 book and then the basement flooded.

Bernie was the fourth one and she was the one with the whole shape of it, and there was nobody to give it to.


She wrote to nine people on the discovery paper. Eight of them sent nothing. The ninth wrote back at 2:14 in the morning, which she found in the kitchen at six with the coffee going.

Emmanuel Ojo was a third-year graduate student and had, he said, been given the timing residuals as a project because nobody senior wanted them. His email was long and had four attachments and one section in the middle that she read eleven or twelve times.

The team had applied a barycentric correction to the event times. That was standard. You take your arrival times and you move them to where the sun is, because the Earth swings a hundred and fifty million kilometers to one side of its orbit and then a hundred and fifty million to the other, and light from anything outside that orbit has to cross the difference. Sixteen and a half minutes, end to end. Every source in the sky breathes with the year, and you correct for it, and if you don't correct for it your timing falls apart in a sine wave with a period of exactly one year.

The Metronome's timing had fallen apart in a sine wave with a period of exactly one year. After they applied the correction.

Before they applied the correction it was clean to the millisecond.

I flagged it as a sign error in our pipeline, Ojo wrote. I spent five weeks looking for the sign error. There is no sign error. The residuals are flat in geocentric time. I have run it four ways.

The other thing, which I have told two people and which neither of them wanted to talk about, is that the intervals are solar days. Exactly. Not sidereal. A source that far away has no reason to care what our sun is doing. It should key to the stars, and it doesn't, it keys to noon.

I don't know how to say the next part in an email so I'll just say it. If the source were three kiloparsecs away we would see the Earth's orbit written into the arrival times. We don't see it. Whatever that means, it means the light isn't crossing our orbit to get here.

Bernie put the cup down and did not pick it up again for a long time.

The star was not blinking. Nothing three kiloparsecs away had been sending anything. The four percent drop in the photometry was not a thing happening out there and arriving here. It was a thing happening here, and the telescope had recorded it the same way Cobb's lamp had recorded it and Pryor's transmitter had recorded it and the pine had recorded it, which was to say by failing, for eleven seconds, in a place where somebody was paying attention.

Six thousand years of the same eleven seconds, arriving faster.


The preprint came down in the second week of October. The replacement was four pages long and was titled On a Periodic Detrending Artifact in VVR Survey Photometry, and the abstract said that the previously reported signal was consistent with an instrumental systematic of undetermined origin, and that the distance estimate in the earlier version should be disregarded, and that the authors thanked several colleagues for helpful discussion.

The Metronome was over in about a day and a half. There was a late-night segment about how everybody had gotten carried away, and a column about how the whole business said something instructive concerning belief, and then the news went back to a bridge in Ohio.

Tobin took it hard, which surprised her.

"It was nice," he said. He was sitting on the floor of the tape room with his back against the flat files, eating a sandwich he'd brought from home in a container that had a cartoon on it. "For like six weeks everybody was talking about the same thing and it wasn't a bad thing. My mother called me. She asked me a science question."

"That's not nothing."

"And now it's a detrending artifact."

Bernie kept her hands on the reel. "Do you want to know what I think it is?"

He stopped chewing.

"Yes," he said.

So she told him. All of it, in order, the way she would have written it: the nineteen cards, the nineteen dates, the four intervals in Cobb's remarks column, the inspector's letter, the cross, Lemay's thesis, Neas's spreadsheet, the sum of every prime under six thousand, and the sine wave with a period of exactly one year that appeared when you corrected for something that wasn't there.

She talked for twenty minutes. Tobin's sandwich sat in the container with a bite out of it.

When she stopped he said, "So where is it."

"Close."

"Close how."

"Closer than the sun," she said. "That's as far as the arithmetic goes. It goes that far and then it stops, because nobody has ever needed to build the next part."

"What's the last date?"

She had written it in the front of her notebook in September and had not looked at it since, which was a lie she told herself daily, since she had looked at it Tuesday.

"November twenty-first. Eight fifty-two in the evening."

Tobin put the lid on his container. He was twenty-four and he had a girlfriend in Bath and a dog with a bad ear and a plan to go back to school in the spring for something involving water quality, and Bernie watched him decide what to do with what she had said, which was the first thing she had wanted to watch in a long time.

"That's a Saturday," he said.

"Yes."

"Is it, like." He turned the container around. "Is it the end of something?"

"It's the end of the sequence."

"That's not what I asked."

"I know," she said. "I'm going to keep saying the smaller thing, because it's the only one I can stand behind."


The nineteenth of November was two days before the last one and eleven seconds long and she spent it on the ledge.

Sarner Ledge Light had been automated in 1935 and destaffed and then discontinued in 1981, and the tower was a stub of granite and rusted iron on a bar you could walk out to for about ninety minutes on either side of low water if you were not particular about your boots. Bernie was not particular about her boots. She went out at seven with a headlamp, a folding stool from the education closet, the 1874 volume in a Mylar sleeve in a canvas bag she should not have brought, and her phone with the stopwatch open.

The tide was out and the bar smelled like a bait barrel. Rockweed on the granite made the footing bad and she went slow and put her stick down twice for every step, which meant she got to the base of the tower at twenty past eight with her hip aching in a way that would keep her up.

She set the stool on the flat and sat.

She could see the whole cove from there. Six house lights on the western shore and the yard light at the co-op and the red on the mast of the marine radio repeater on Bagley Hill, blinking its own dull rhythm that had nothing to do with anything. A boat somewhere out past the point with a motor that needed work.

At 8:51 she started the stopwatch. Her hands were cold and she had to do it twice.

At 8:52 the light stopped working.

It did not go dark. That was the part she would think about afterward and never find a way to write down. Everything that was lit stayed lit. The six house lights were there. The red repeater was there and it blinked twice while it was happening. Her headlamp was on and she could feel the warmth of it on her forehead and she could see the bulb itself, a small white shape a few inches above her eyes.

But the beam did not reach the rock.

She held her hand up in front of the lamp and her hand did not brighten and the rock behind her hand did not darken, because there was no shadow, because nothing was arriving anywhere. The lights of the cove sat out on the water like beads on a table, giving nothing to the water, and the water was not black, exactly. It was the color of a thing you are not being shown.

She counted. She had counted eleven seconds so many times by then that she did not need the stopwatch, and she counted them out loud, and she could hear herself perfectly well.

On eleven it came back, all of it at once, and her headlamp put a hard white circle on the granite about two feet across with a crab in the middle of it, and the crab went sideways into the weed.

Bernie sat on the stool with her mouth open and her heart going and did not move for a while.

The stopwatch said 11.06 seconds from her start, which was wrong, because she had started it a minute early. She checked it three times. The stopwatch had run 11.06 seconds and then stopped by itself, or had never run the first fifty seconds, or had run them and did not have them.

She had taken four photographs while it was happening, blind, holding the phone out. She looked at them on the walk back with the tide already turning and coming up over her boots at the low place near shore.

They were fine. All four. Correctly exposed, slightly blurred from her hand, showing wet granite and rockweed and the base of the tower and the light of the co-op yard lamp reflecting off the water in a long ordinary streak.


She wrote the finding aid on the twentieth and finished it on the twenty-first, and it was good. It was the best one she had ever done. Wes read it in her office standing up with his coat on and then he sat down halfway through and took the coat off, which she counted as the highest professional honor she had received in eleven years.

She wrote the biographical note about a man who worked at the paper mill in Bucksport and who sat up with a receiver in an unheated back bedroom for twenty-three years and wrote down what he heard on index cards in a hand that got worse. She wrote the scope and content note. She described the series and the subseries and the condition of the acetate and the four reels that had been in the water and were not coming back. She wrote the processing note, and she said in it that the collection had been processed by Bernadette Auclair between March and November, and she did not put anything in it about herself, because that is not what a processing note is for.

In the container list, at the end, after the shoebox and after the nineteen cards that she had foldered separately and described item by item, she added a line for the series she had created in September and had not shown to anyone but Tobin.

She printed it, signed the accession sheet, and put the folder in the box, and put the box on the cart with the eight others going up to the mezzanine, and left the cart by the stairs because it was four thirty and Wes had already gone and she would take it up on Monday one carton at a time.

Tobin's dog had an ear appointment in Bath. He had texted twice and she had answered once.

At quarter past eight she went down to the lobby and turned off the overheads and left the case lights on, and she sat on the bench across from the pine with the printout in her lap and her coat still on because the heat went off at six.

The rings ran out from the pith in their thousands, and Ward Lemay's numbers went with them, and near the outer edge the nineteen red dots sat in the wood where a boy from Bangor had put them in 1954, close together at the top and spreading as they went down.

The compressor cut out and came back.

At 8:51 she folded her glasses and put them in her lap and kept looking at the ink.
